Football referees hardly make the news, but when they do, it’s usually for reasons that stretch the realms of credulity to various degrees.

Apart from the weekly howlers in the Premier League (and elsewhere) that pit fans against each other until the football houses, or Fifa – when they feel like it – take punitive measures, referees do actually command the headlines for grotesquely violent, and sometimes comical reasons.

The hazards of their job was well highlighted early this year when an Argentine footballer, incensed at being sent off, pulled out a gun and shot a referee Oscar Flores dead. You can read about it here.

Similar to their South American neighbours, Brazilian football fans shocked the world in 2013 when they killed a referee and put his head on a wooden stake, hence it came as no surprise when another ref in the Brazilian Clausura pulled out a gun during a match last year. They grow wiser.

African football, particularly Zimbabwean football, happened to be the latest setting for football-gone-gaga as things got ugly during a Southern Division One league tie over the weekend.

The match between Amagagasi and Victoria Falls Tigers turned into a slugfest after a Tigers player was shown red by the referee.

And he reacted nicely; by unloading a barrage of punches on the stunned referee who, after one punch too many, reacted in kind until both sets of players prevailed on the situation. So much for the rules of the game and fair play.

You can see the action in the clip below.

Supersport journalist Ephraim Tagu uploaded the video to Twitter and fans have been reacting…

Seems the fans favour a life ban, but won’t that be as extreme as the player’s and ref’s reactions?
