A High Court sitting in Apo, Abuja, has dismissed a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by a former Minister of Aviation Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, seeking an order releasing him from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
Fani-Kayode, who was the Head of Media and Publicity for the campaign of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the 2015 elections, had filed the suit following his arrest by the EFCC on May 9, 2016 over money laundering charges connected to diversion of funds meant for arms procurement to political campaigns.
Fani-Kayode, alongside a former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman – the Director of Finance of the campaign organization – and two others were arraigned by the anti-graft agency on a 17-count charge before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday.
While delivering judgment on the suit filed by Fani-Kayode to challenge his detention by the EFCC, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi held that the legal action lacked merit, Punch reports.
The judge maintained that the detention was not illegal since it was backed by a court order.
Justice Adeniyi, however, faulted the practice by the EFCC of arresting and detaining a suspect for the purposes of investigation.
